Hello everyone, I'm new to the site, and since it appears as if a great deal of intelligent and knowledgable people are in the forum, I just have a little question or two to ask: Which is the better plane, the F-16XL or the F/A-18E/F. That question has been on my mind for a while now, and even though I've looked on the web a great deal, I can't find any good comparisons between the two, probably because now the F-16XL is just a research plane. But if it were to go into production being upgraded to a combat - capable aircraft with an avionics suite on - par with the new Block 60s and a similarly powerful engine to match, I wonder which would be better, in terms of top speed, maneuverability, range, payload / payload diversity, avionics, the whole nine. I would just like to know, and your thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanx.

The Soviets were taken somewhat by surprise at this surge; as of when the F-16 first flew, the Soviet air force and those of its allies had nothing that could compete. They answered a few years later with the MiG-29, a smaller twin-engine design similar to the larger Su-27 which was in pre-production to answer the F-15. These six fighters - F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18, MiG-29 and Su-27 - represented the cutting edge of fighter design as of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

I know, yet another topic, but hey, this is somethin' else that was on my mind; I was wonderin', will the F - 16 (as in the combat, not research versions) be replaced soon. I mean, of course like not within a few weeks or months, but within maybe a few years. Currently, there are 2 planes that seem to be very capable of filling the role the F - 16 takes on: the F - 22 and the JSF.

Even though the F - 22 was originally intended to replace the F - 15, I seriously doubt that Congress would be willing to spend billions of dollars on just an air - superiority fighter, would they? From what I know, the F - 22 is faster, probably more agile, has a greater range, higher ceiling, is a hell of a lot stealthier, and a whole lot more. Even the new Block 60 F - 16s don't seem to match up that well! Could it replace the F - 16 in the near future, assuming it enters production in reasonable numbers?

Of course, it's expensive as hell, so maybe not completely, but what about the JSF, which is meant to replace a lot of fighters, from the F - 15 to the F/A - 18 to the Jaguar, to possibly even the Tornado. It seems that a great deal of the nations are injecting all their effort into making a cheaper, yet just as capable version of the F - 22 to replace a great deal of existing aircraft. The JSF definitely seems like a greater threat than the F - 22 replacing the F - 16, so I guess my question is, is the threat real, or am I just tripping? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I've seen very nice picture of F-16 AM 80-0584 at Edwards AFB, armed with 4 HARMs. The shot was taken during testing MLU programme. I'd like to know if there are some USAF combat units which are able to carry four Harms under their Vipers and if some AM/MLU vipers have that ability. Thanks for every response.

I want to ask what are the main problems that the F16 pilot faces when he want to dropping a bomb?
Because in one site i read this sentencs:

Dropping bombs are not something easy, the pilot must accurately identify the target, estimate the time lag before dropping the bomb.

Is it true , if yes what they mean by "time lag"?

614th TFS "Lucky Devils" in the Gulf War

The latest update to the Lucky Devils website is very likely the last photo of F-16C 87-0257, taken as it was arriving at EOR on 19 Jan 1991, prior to launch on "Package Q", the largest strike package flown during the Gulf War - taken by Dave Merriman.

Hours later 257 was hit by a SAM over Baghdad and went down while attempting to return to the border, her pilot "Tico" Tice was captured and hald as a POW for 45 days.

3.7 million pounds of ordinance, 1303 sorties, 42 days, 24 aircraft.

hey guys,

just woondering, i was looking at some footage of fighter jets dogfighting and i noticed when they executed an evasive acent or a banked turn, there would be white lines that came off the wings. in not talking about contrails i mean on the very tips of the wings. is this a visible "draft" or temperary void of gasses made because theyre moving so fast? please tell if you happen to know. thanks

Vipers and Sparrow

I've read that F-16 block 20 and 30 are capable to carry Sparrow missiles, but I haven't seen any picture with them. Do you have any ? And I'd like to know if Vipers in Europe during cold war used to fly with Sparrows.I don't mean ADF version.

Hi,

I'm building a 1/9th scale turbine powered F16 and I'm looking for information on a particular color scheme I saw.

It was mostly two-tone grey but the tail was painted in horizontal red and white stripes. The only thing I've discovered was that it may have come from Ramstein AFB.

Can anyone help me with this?

Terminal velocity in a dive

hi,

What is the terminal velocity for an F-16, or similar fighter jet, in an unpowered dive? Will an F-16 break the sound barrier if diving straight down with engines off? Consider a starting altitude of about 50,000 feet.

I'm developing the physics portion of a flight sim game and when I drop a fighter jet from 50,000 feet with no thrust, it reaches about 820 mph, then begins to slow down at around 20,000 feet due to the thicker atmosphere. Is this close to real-world?

I hope the pilot who can answer this question lived to tell about it
